pat-test.wales carry out in-service inspection and testing of portable electrical equipment (PAT testing) in accord with the IET code of practice, (4th edition). Typically we provide services to small and medium businesses including retail, offices, hotels, self-catering holiday let owners, and landlords. If you are a business owner or duty holder and are looking for a professional PAT provider, please contact us for a no obligation quote using the contact form or any of the contact methods.
Formed in 2018, pat-test.wales is a sister company to Gleam Property Services, who have been trading since 2016. The company is a partnership of husband and wife Sophia and Steve Channon, and offers services including Pure Water Window Cleaning, and holiday home maintenance and management.
The PAT business is primarily operated by Steve, who is the sole Technician. His technical experience goes back to when he left school (1980 something!) and embarked on a 4-year apprenticeship in mechanical engineering. After qualifying he worked in the building preservation and motor trades for a number of years before enjoying a 21-year career as a Photocopier and Digital MFD Service Technician and Team Leader, working for market leaders Canon UK and Konica Minolta UK. Due to a decline in work in the local area, he decided to set up in business, along with Sophia.
Having many years' experience of servicing and repairing complex electrical appliances, a big part of which is electrical safety, Steve has undertaken additional training to become a competent person as defined by the IET code of practice for PAT test technicians, and is committed to providing excellent customer service and the highest levels of safety.
Before working for myself I worked as an electrical service engineer for many years and after additional training have set up pat-test.wales as another service to offer, especially to the holiday let industry. We run a small Airbnb in Fishguard, and guest safety is something we take very seriously as I know most owners do. In service inspection and testing of electrical appliances (PAT) is not compulsory itself, but various laws (electricity at work regulations 1989, housing act 2004 to name a couple) stress the importance of checking and maintaining appliances regularly.
The service I perform includes a formal visual inspection, which includes checking the plug, fuse, cable and appliance housing. Many faults can be picked up at this stage and rectified. Then a range of electrical tests appropriate to the appliance type are carried out. The results are recorded and a pass/fail label attached to the appliance (in the case of a fail the responsible person will be informed that the item should be removed from service). Any minor repairs required are carried out free of charge (replacement of plugs or fuses etc). After the test a full report and appliance list can be sent electronically or printed (also makes a useful asset list). If further repairs are required (re-wiring etc) these can be carried out in the workshop for an extra fee.
The cost is a flat £2 per item, which is basically anything with a plug on it, including extension leads. I can carry out tests at a time to suit the customer, ie changeovers, evenings, weekends etc.
